Two Alphabets. One Weekend Each.

Japanese uses two phonetic alphabets: hiragana (ひらがな — hiragana) for Japanese words, and katakana (カタカナ — katakana) for borrowed ones — coffee, apartment, ramen. Forty-six characters each, and every one makes exactly one sound, every time. That's the good news: unlike English spelling, kana never lies to you.
